oil leak / smoke from engine bay near alternator

Post by rossonza »

Hi guys,

took the car out today and noticed a few missfires then smoke billowing out my engine bay when i came to a stop. my turbos on its way out so thought it was that... a few miles later i get flickering engine warning light and battery light.

looks like my cam cover or cam seals are leaking into my alternator.

now this is relatively recent as i changed the belt around 4 weeks ago and couldnt see any signs of oil then.

which do you think it is from this pic? havnt had time to pull the upper cover off but did notice the philips scres on the cam cover were all a quarter turn loose? presume theyve shaken themselves loose.

Cam seals of rocker cover seal.

Both are easy to change, but by the sounds of it your rocker cover wasn't tight down.

You really need to clean it off and have another look.

was cam cover, cleaned it all up and removed the upper cover and all was fine inside. so i plan to remove and re-do the cam cover.

Removed alternator. Which was fun.

It's an oval ended alternator. But I've read rev 1/2 should be round? I'm on a stock rev2 JDM turbo.

Any ideas on where is ok to get a replacement alternator? eBay ok? £90
