Misfire / bad shaking - Diagnosis help

Post by CurtisRW »

So my car started to shake/vibrate fairly badly when I slow down and come to a stop in traffic. It generally only happens after I've been driving for at least 15-30 mins but isn't 100% consistent.

It only occurs when I stop the car but once it starts it get progressively worse and the steering wheel will start the shake and the engine behind me will be shaking and you can feel it through the whole car. Then as I step on the gas and get the car moving again it subsides.

Posted this on an FB group when it first started happening and they all said it was engine mounts but that wasn't the case. A garage said it sounds like a misfire and on further inspection I found that the spark plug cables were damaged.

So I replaced the spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap and ignition rotor. - but this hasn't stopped the problem.

So does anyone know what this could be? Does it sound like a misfire?

Thanks for any help! desperate to get this sorted now...

Misfire

Might be worth checking all the metal/ rubber pipes around the TVIS system
Check for loose and damaged cracked ones.
Could also be a faulty waxstat.

Have you checked the fault codes?
I had similar symptoms in a corolla gt many years back.
Turned out to be faulty throttle position sensor.

If there isn't any warning lights showing is it still worth checking for fault codes?

It can be yes, given it's very easy to check for fault codes. All you need is a paperclip.

Checked for fault codes... Don't think there were any.
