Scottish Tour

Post by Alasdair Mair »

I've had verbal interest from a few members in a possible weekend or long weekend driving through the Scottish Highlands and Islands.

Haven't set a date but September was mentioned to give members time to plan.

Possible routes could include the North Coast 500 route from Inverness travelling up around the most northern coasts. This is 516 miles from start to finish and will take a full day for those down south to travel each way.

Another option would be a more flexible route possibly covering some or all of the following: Glencoe, Fort William, the famous Bealach na Bà Road near Applecross and ofcourse the best of the lot - the Isle of Skye!

I'll include a poll and see what people think. Any further comments or suggestions are welcome.

Skye is stunning. The northwest coast is even better. Having said that I only saw a bit of Skye

Hopefully join you for some of it

unless they've redone the roads up there, the road to Portree was pretty rough. Quite a few pot holes (not uncommon these days) but more the undulations which will catch you out if you're not careful. The 500 is a great route but you'd be best splitting it at Ullapool and having an overnight stopover, esp for folks coming from further south.

The majority of the roads on Skye were quite good last year compared to previous visits. Better than half the roads over here on the East Coast!
