Looks like I may be getting into a 2ZZ Mk3 pretty soon - worried I'm going to miss my Rev 3 turbo though (we'll be doing a straight swap).
Has anybody made this transition?
I can imagine straight line speed may suffer a bit from 310bhp down to 200bhp, but I do miss being able to rag the nuts off a car without massively exceeding the speed limit Also, I get a sixth gear to play with.
Handling wise I think the Mk3 will really show up my old turbo, but in terms of looks I'm still not persuaded Do like the idea of a convertible though.
At the moment I'm thinking I should just go ahead and see how it goes! I don't feel like I've had the mk2 long enough to really get to grips with it, but also don't want to miss out on the mk3

Re: On the brink of changing cars..
nooooo, You will certainly miss the power, It really depends what you want from the car but after going back to a 200bhp car a few years back my Mr2 (turbo) itch came roaring back after about a year!! I simply had to get one, I can put up with the lack of comforts and refinements in exchange for that brutal 90's power delivery that comes with one....Now I don't think I could ever get rid of the Mr2!
Oh, just to add to the convertible thing, My first car was a convertible and i always felt really exposed, I feel that the T-tops are absolutely perfect, Roof off without that horrible exposed feeling!

Really not a fan of the MK3, so rev3 turbo hands down.

Re: On the brink of changing cars..
I have had several of all 3..
if you want shear power the the mk2 wins.. me personally i much prefer a mk1 and mk3..
i loved my mk3 and really enjoyed it on track.. and considering getting another at the mo
would love a 2zz.. you will enjoy it lots and the turn in and corning you will enjoy
do it.. i would rather have the 2zz over the turbo

Cheers buddy.. Hoping to get the recently acquired 205 1.9gti on the road this week.. Only had a 1.6 before so this should be fun.. When that's on the road ill be looking tl see what will replace the 206 gti180... Maybe starlet turbo, mk3 1.8mx5 or.........
Any back on topic.. 2zz.. Everytime.. Turbo gives you a buzz when you plant it.. The mk3 is fun all the time I found having fun id much more fun that outright speed.. That's what tracks are for

Re: On the brink of changing cars..
Pete did you buy Scott's Pug then?
I know I'll miss the turbo for sure, but I've still got my project T-Top mk2 which I might finally finish if I let this one go just need to drop the engine in once I've figured out how to put it all back together!
It'd just be a shame to see the nice parts go really, and a set of pretty much new AD08R's
The 2ZZ converted cars hardly ever come up, so it's at least worth a look. It has a hardtop too Shep, so I can hide in the dark cabin
Anybody else always get the urge to change cars as soon as they're finally 'done'? I did it with my Scooby and lost a heap of money, all to fund a mad RX7 which never came to fruition... One day

I'm already considering selling up. Fancy a V8 next, and an Audi S5 fits the bill perfectly.
To be decided yet though....

Re: On the brink of changing cars..
I had a celica 190 for a while. Worst car ive ever had.
It was faultless, but my god I hated the engine noise, characteristics and lack of torque.
Gearboxes prone to exploding too.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uLMEmdB2ZE8 turn the boost up on the 2ZZ and your rev3 will seem very slow

^ this, I borrowed one off mate for a weekend, truly awful car, gutless, slow, terrible gearbox/engine combo - driving it was like: nothing, nothing, nothing, 6250rpm waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaabababababababababababababa (mostly noise, little progress) change gear, drop out of VVTI "lift", bog down, wait, wait, wait, wait WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAABABABABABABABABABABABA
ooooh, I'm doing 73mph
I wouldn't have one, for free.

Re: On the brink of changing cars..
I built a mk3 3SGTE (best of all worlds on paper imo) but also threw a 2ZZ in my daily Mk3 at the time.
Was absolutely crap and the most overrated swap, struggled to sell the car as well for some reason (maybe too honest with my appraisal of it).
I expected it to be similar to our EP3 but it was worlds apart and also slower than an EP3 which is much heavier.
Can be made to look ok with the right parts I think.

Re: On the brink of changing cars..
Surely the 2zz (192bhp) would suit a lighter car though? 7th gen Celica was 1202kg whereas the mk3 MR2 is only 996kg - once stripped I'd like to think 950kg would be quite achievable. That means power to weight of 201.6bhp per tonne whereas the Celica only sees 159.7bhp per tonne.
Lotus used it in the Elise and Exige - could it just be that the engine only shines when it's in a lighter car? (S2 Elise 860kg, 223bhp per tonne). I'd love an Elise but don't really have 15k to throw at an S2..
Obviously I'm going to see some biased opinions as I've posted in mk2, and if I'm honest I prefer most things about my turbo - but shouldn't I give the roadster a chance?
Worst comes to worst and I hate it, just sell up and buy another Rev 3 turbo - they're not as hard to come by

Re: On the brink of changing cars..
They never make the claimed 190bhp (even in the Celica), more like 170bhp in a roadster with its restrictive exhaust system. Lotus uses a different ecu, make of that what you will.
Depends how high you value it as well, took me a long time to sell my 2ZZ one at £2k.

Re: On the brink of changing cars..
That's very helpful feedback actually Lee, I think you may have persuaded me to stick with the Rev 3
Maybe I should just get an NA Mx5 Eunos as a second car like my mate keeps telling me to - I essentially wanted the mk3 for handling anyway and I imagine they're pretty close in terms of fun.
I was actually looking at this one:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Toyota-MR2-Ro ... 1e9d42a8f6
I'd say it's a little overpriced, and would value it at more 3-3.5k because it's a pre-facelift but I guess if they're over hyped then I've dodged a bullet. Thanks

Absolutely spot on. 950kg or not its a terrible engine.
