post facelift engine failure?

Post by minimike »

Is there any evidence out there of a post facelift (2003 on) car experiencing the dreaded pre-cat engine failure?

My old car, but it was caught before any damage was done and as of last year (on its 3rd owner, now 4th) was still going strong. It can still happen due to the cheapy precats, but because the piston ring issue was sorted it's far less likely.

I've got a 2003 MR-S that had an engine failure. But it was racing at the time. :)

I got them knocked out of the g/f's '05 car... better safe than sorry and it's not big job.

It's not unknown for facelift engine failures.
The engines have the improved oil control in the pistons, but the precats do still deteriorate, disintegrate and cause other problems. We're starting to see more facelift cars with cracking and pitting precats. Whether the material gets back into the engineor not they will collapse and block the main cat which is never good for an engine.
