We only went as far as checking if the bell housing would line up - it didn't - and then we put it back on the pallet to go back to the scammers that sold it. Incidentally, the guy that owns the car still hasn't got his money back from the 1GR...

Phil Davies has given me permission to cut and paste his email to me from his first Rally meeting:

Phil wrote:On Thursday I swapped to some decent tyres and took it on a 100 mile run down to show it to my navigator and took in my usual test track - Cheddar gorge at midnight. I went up the extremely tight and twisty gorge like I have never done before!

On the rally there were 68 starters and we were seeded at 67 because I had no previous rally form.
There was a recent WRC Subaru and another older Prodrive car, a metro 6R4 and dozens of Escorts and Imprezas, a few hatchbacks converted to rear-wheel drive and two Aston Martin Rally GT V8. The smaller engined classes were mostly Novas and Pug 205s.

After my first stage I was 24th which surprised everyone. There is the odd Mk1 doing rallies but they had never achieved any results so most people had written MR2s off as no good. The low seeding proved a problem all day because we kept on catching slower cars and it was difficult to overtake on the narrow sections.

The second stage, our low seeding also proved a problem because the first 30 cars managed to avoid the huge downpour but the rest of us got caught. I had no wets and I spun under braking as well as aquaplaning a few times at over 100. We lost over a minute compared to the cars in the top 20 and we dropped to 38th.

The engine was faultless all day which is exactly what I wanted for my first few rallies. I could have done with the VVti and some extra mid-range because the car has so much traction. There was a lot of second and third gear chicanes and 90 degree corners and giving it a bootfull at around 4000rpm there wasn't always enough torque to break traction to get it sideways, especially with the new diff and sticky slicks. A higher rev limit would also have helped because it would have saved some gear changes in the tighter complexes.

I did have one huge 100mph spin in the dry - the car was at full lean but still not sure why but it broke away so quickly. In a single seater I would have said that it either ran out of suspension travel or rolling too much and it was falling onto the outside of the tyre - I will have to take the spring off the strut and take some measurements of the suspension movement and dynamic camber. It could also be down to corner weights because the car doesn't sit level any more - the new engine has shifted the weight distribution so I will get that sorted.

The other problem that dogged us all day was boiling brake fluid and there were too many concrete fence posts, barrels and tyre walls to take too many chances in the braking zones. I'm sure just a change to proper fluid should fix this.

So despite the small problems we pulled back to 22nd overall at the end.
If we had been seeded higher we would have missed the downpour and would have finished 18th.
And towards the end I got into a rythm and was setting top 15 times beating times of the two Astons who finished 16th and 17th.
With a few little things to sort like handbrake, brake balance, VVTi and finish stripping weight then I'm convinced it will be in the top 10, even with me driving.

Everyone was impressed by its straightline speed from such a standard engine and they all loved the noise.
You could say I'm a bit pleased!

Hopefully we'll get some photos from the event soon!
