Fitting a Mk1 gear stick surround
by Nick Challoner

I recently fitted a new leather gear stick surround to my Mk1 and it looks and feels a lot better than the ragged worn-out one that was there before! The book price from Toyota is £21.75, but I got mine for about £15 with the MR2DC discount and because they (Hills of Woodford) charged me twice for a wheel nut when they replaced my wheel stud a few weeks ago. It takes about 10 minutes to fit;

Whip off the rear console (4 screws - 2 inside the box at the top) Whip off the centre console (6 screws - 2 under the ashtray on early models like mine) Unscrew the gear knob, and then pull out the old surround from the underside of the centre console. The new one clips in place easily, then it\'s just a case of reversing the above to put it all back together again.

£21 is a bit steep, but it does look a hell of a lot better for it. So, if yours is tatty I\'d recommend replacing it, especially as it\'s so easy to do.
